Nobody knows exactly. Commercial estimates of the global adult entertainment market range from $58.4 billion (Allied Market Research, 2022) to $337.7 billion (Transparency Market Research, 2025), and the biggest one counts prostitution and strip clubs.
The money that can actually be traced is much smaller. The latest disclosed figures for OnlyFans, LiveJasmin, MindGeek (now Aylo) and Stripchat, a mix of revenue, turnover, a projection and gross profit from 2022 to 2025, add up to about $2.63 billion (our calculation).
In this article, we’ll break down where the $97 billion figure came from, what porn companies really earn, how porn sites make money, how traffic compares with revenue, and how porn stacks up against Netflix and Hollywood.
Top Porn Industry Statistics
- Estimates of the global adult entertainment market range from $58.4 billion to $337.7 billion, a 5.8-fold spread.
- The famous “$97 billion” figure is a 2006 estimate by TopTen Reviews that included $27.4 billion for China, mostly from sex toy production.
- Forbes put total US porn revenue at $2.6 billion to $3.9 billion in 2001, while a widely repeated claim at the time said $10 billion to $14 billion.
- The latest disclosed figures for OnlyFans, LiveJasmin, MindGeek and Stripchat add up to about $2.63 billion, just 2.7% of $97 billion.
- US porn websites will earn an estimated $2.6 billion in 2026, according to IBISWorld.
- Fans paid $7.22 billion on OnlyFans in the year to November 2024, equal to 21.5% of 2025’s global box office.
- Pornhub gets about 16.7 times as many visits as LiveJasmin, yet LiveJasmin’s 2022 turnover was about 16% higher than MindGeek’s projection for that year.
How Big Is the Porn Industry?
There’s no audited figure: the global adult entertainment market was worth $58.4 billion in 2022, according to Allied Market Research, and $337.7 billion in 2025, according to Transparency Market Research. Both are commercial estimates, not counts.

The definitions explain most of the gap. Transparency Market Research includes prostitution, strip clubs and host clubs alongside videos and live chat. Allied’s market covers DVDs, magazines, sex toys and novelties.
Here’s a breakdown of the most-cited estimates of the porn and adult industry’s size:
| Estimate | Publisher | Year | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| $337.7 billion | Transparency Market Research | 2025 | Prostitution, strip clubs, live chat, videos, games, toys |
| $97 billion | TopTen Reviews | 2006 | Includes sex toy production; no detailed method |
| $88.03 billion | 360iResearch | 2026 | Online adult content: videos, live streams, chat, games |
| $58.8 billion | Global Industry Analysts | 2023 | Sex toys, magazines and books |
| $58.4 billion | Allied Market Research | 2022 | DVDs, magazines, sex toys, novelties |
| $2.6 billion | IBISWorld | 2026 | US adult websites only |
| $2.63 billion | Our disclosed-figures floor | 2022–2025 | Mixed revenue, turnover, projection and gross profit of 4 companies |

The highest global estimate is about 5.8 times the lowest, Allied’s $58.4 billion (our calculation). Sex toys do a lot of the work, too: in Global Industry Analysts’ forecast, sex toys and accessories make up $43.5 billion of the $74.7 billion market projected for 2030, or 58% (our calculation).
Where Does the $97 Billion Figure Come From?
It traces to TopTen Reviews, a Utah software-review company, which estimated worldwide porn revenue at $97 billion for 2006, according to the Deseret News (2007). The company said it drew on more than 10,000 sources, including the porn industry, media reports and anti-pornography groups, but published no detailed method.
The total wasn’t all video. China alone was put at $27.4 billion, mainly because of its role as a major sex toy producer. TopTen Reviews also claimed the industry out-earned Microsoft, Google, Yahoo and Apple combined.
The number then took on a life of its own. In 2010, the Free Speech Coalition, the adult industry’s own trade group, reported that conservative activist group Family Safe Media was citing $97 billion globally and $13.3 billion for the US. Its response: “We would LOVE to know where they get their numbers.”
An earlier myth had already been debunked. In May 2001, a New York Times Magazine cover story claimed porn had $10 billion to $14 billion in annual sales, a figure often credited to Forrester Research. Forbes checked and found “there is no such study”; Forrester had estimated online adult content at $750 million to $1 billion.
Here’s a breakdown of Forbes’ own estimate of US porn revenue:
| Segment | Forbes Estimate (2001) |
|---|---|
| Adult video sales and rentals | $500 million to $1.8 billion |
| Internet | $1 billion |
| Magazines | $1 billion |
| Pay-per-view | $128 million |
| Total | $2.6 billion to $3.9 billion |
That put even the low end of the $10–14 billion claim about 2.6 times above the top of Forbes’ range (our calculation). The global $97 billion figure is almost 25 times Forbes’ top US estimate.
How Big Is the US Porn Industry?
US adult and pornographic websites will earn an estimated $2.6 billion in 2026, up 4.4% on the year, according to IBISWorld. That’s a commercial estimate covering websites only, with 2.8% average yearly growth since 2021.
Broader US estimates come mostly from trade insiders. XBIZ poll respondents put the industry at about $5 billion a year in 2012, and XBIZ’s founder said it would likely be over $6 billion in 2018, according to Quartz (2018). Quartz called $6 billion to $15 billion the realistic range.
Here’s a breakdown of US porn industry estimates over time:
| Year | Estimate | Who Made It |
|---|---|---|
| c. 2000 | $10 billion to $14 billion | New York Times Magazine claim |
| c. 2000 | $2.6 billion to $3.9 billion | Forbes |
| 2005 | $12.6 billion | Adult Video News (AVN) |
| c. 2010 | $13.3 billion | Family Safe Media, relayed by the Free Speech Coalition |
| 2012 | $10 billion | AVN’s CEO |
| 2012 | About $5 billion | XBIZ poll |
| 2018 | Over $6 billion | XBIZ founder |
| 2026 | $2.6 billion (websites only) | IBISWorld |

Even the insiders hedge. “No one does” know the exact size, AVN’s managing editor told Quartz. AVN’s own 2005 figure of $12.6 billion couldn’t be independently verified, ABC News reported in 2006.
California’s government reached a similar verdict. Adult film production in the state is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars per year to, at most, a few billion dollars per year,” with “little verifiable data,” according to the California Legislative Analyst’s Office (2015).
How Much Money Do the Biggest Porn Companies Make?
OnlyFans is the largest by disclosed revenue, with about $1.55 billion in the year to November 2025, according to its owner’s accounts as reported by Forbes via Yahoo Finance. OnlyFans also hosts non-adult creators, and fans paid it $7.22 billion in the year to November 2024 (Variety).

Pornhub’s owner doesn’t publish group accounts. MindGeek’s revenue was reported at $731 million in 2020, according to The Globe and Mail, and investor materials projected about $455 million for 2022 if Visa and Mastercard resumed processing (Semafor). Ethical Capital Partners paid $400 million for the company in 2023, according to The Logic. Our guide to Pornhub’s ownership history traces every owner since 2007.
Here’s a breakdown of what the biggest porn companies have disclosed:
| Company (Main Brands) | Latest Figure | Year | Type of Figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| OnlyFans (Fenix International) | $1.55 billion | FY2025 | Revenue, company accounts |
| MindGeek / Aylo (Pornhub) | $455 million | 2022 | Investor projection (if card payments resumed) |
| LiveJasmin (Docler/Byborg) | Nearly €500 million (up to about $527 million) | 2022 | Turnover, reported |
| Byborg (LiveJasmin’s parent) | $161 million | 2022 | Profit, reported |
| Playboy (PLBY Group) | $120.9 million | 2025 | Revenue, listed company |
| Stripchat | Over $100 million | 2022 | Gross profit, Cyprus registry |
| WGCZ (XVideos, XNXX), xHamster, Chaturbate, Vixen | Not reported | – | Private; no public accounts |
XVideos’ owner is the least transparent. WGCZ’s financial dealings “remain almost entirely hidden,” according to Byline Times (2025). The French magazine Challenges put founder Stéphane Pacaud’s wealth at €400 million in 2022 (netzpolitik.org).
Our Disclosed-Figures Floor: $2.63 Billion
Adding the latest disclosed figures for OnlyFans, LiveJasmin, MindGeek and Stripchat gives about $2.63 billion (our calculation). This is a partial floor, not a market size: it leaves out every private company that doesn’t publish accounts. It also mixes years (2022–2025) and measures: revenue, turnover, a conditional projection and gross profit.
Byborg’s profit is left out because it overlaps with LiveJasmin’s turnover, and Playboy because PLBY Group credits its growth mainly to licensing and its Honey Birdette lingerie brand.
Here’s a breakdown of the disclosed-figures floor:
| Company | Figure Used | Share of Floor |
|---|---|---|
| OnlyFans | $1.55 billion (revenue, FY2025) | 59% |
| LiveJasmin | About $527 million (turnover, 2022) | 20% |
| MindGeek / Aylo | $455 million (projection, 2022) | 17.3% |
| Stripchat | $100 million (gross profit, 2022) | 3.8% |
| Total | About $2.63 billion | 100% |
The floor is just 2.7% of the $97 billion claim. Allied’s $58.4 billion estimate is about 22 times larger, and Transparency Market Research’s $337.7 billion is about 128 times larger (our calculations).
How Do Porn Sites Make Money?
Mostly through ads, subscriptions and a cut of fan spending: advertising was “approximately 50%” of MindGeek’s revenue, its then CEO told Canadian MPs in 2021, and for Pornhub today “it’s 100 percent ads,” an Aylo executive told netzpolitik.org (2024).
MindGeek made $213 million from advertising in 2018, according to a pitch deck seen by The Logic. That’s 46.3% of MindGeek’s $460 million that year (our calculation).

Paid memberships are the second pillar. Aylo Billing Ltd, the Dublin subsidiary that resells memberships, had revenue of $307.4 million in 2020, according to the Irish Examiner.
Creator platforms take a percentage. OnlyFans keeps 20% of each fan payment (Euronews), while cam platforms keep an estimated 50% to 65% of what viewers pay, according to Human Rights Watch (2024). Studio webcam models can end up with as little as 10%, according to ICIJ.
Licensing is a smaller stream. LiveJasmin’s owner Byborg agreed to pay Playboy at least $300 million over 15 years, or $20 million a year (our calculation), according to PLBY Group (2025).

Does More Traffic Mean More Money?
Not necessarily: Pornhub had about 3.4 billion visits in September 2026, about 16.7 times LiveJasmin’s 203.01 million, according to Semrush estimates. Yet LiveJasmin’s 2022 turnover of about $527 million was roughly 16% higher than the $455 million MindGeek projected for 2022 (our calculations).
Paying fans beat free viewers. OnlyFans had 394.54 million visits, about 1 for every 8.6 on Pornhub, but its FY2025 revenue was about 3.4 times MindGeek’s 2022 projection (our calculation, mixing years). Our ranking of the biggest porn sites by traffic shows that sites run by just 3 company groups took 83.7% of top-10 visits.
Here’s a breakdown of traffic vs the latest revenue figures:
| Site | Visits (Sep 2026) | Owner’s Latest Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Pornhub | 3.4 billion | $455 million (MindGeek, 2022 projection) |
| XVideos | 2.27 billion | Not reported |
| Stripchat | 646.2 million | Over $100 million gross profit (2022) |
| Chaturbate | 410.84 million | Not reported |
| OnlyFans | 394.54 million | $1.55 billion revenue (FY2025) |
| LiveJasmin | 203.01 million | About $527 million turnover (2022) |

Cam sites show the gap most clearly. Stripchat, Chaturbate and LiveJasmin had 1.26 billion visits combined, only 11.4% of the 11.09 billion visits to the 10 biggest adult video and cam sites (our calculation from Semrush data).
How Many People Work in the Porn Industry, and What Do They Earn?
The core studio workforce is small: the industry’s testing database held 1,266 performers in 2012, according to the Free Speech Coalition, and California’s adult film industry “employs several thousand people,” many part-time (California LAO).
Creator platforms are far larger. OnlyFans had 4.63 million creator accounts in 2024, though accounts aren’t people and not all are adult (Euronews).

Pay is modest for most. Women typically earn $800 to $1,000 per studio scene and men $500 to $600, according to CNBC. Female A-list stars can earn more than $350,000 a year, about 7 times the roughly $50,000 most studio performers make (CNBC, 2014).
Independent creators earn less on average. Surveyed adult creators had a median yearly adult income of $30,000 in 2025, according to SWR Data. Rates also vary by scene type, gender and platform, as our guide to porn star pay shows.

How Has the Porn Business Changed Since the DVD Era?
Physical media collapsed: adult DVD sales fell 50% between 2007 and 2012, according to an anti-piracy firm’s estimate reported by HuffPost, and AVN’s CEO guessed US revenue had slid from a $13–15 billion mid-2000s peak to $10 billion in 2012.
Free tube sites and piracy were widely blamed. Adult DVD sales and rentals dropped 22% in 2008 alone, more than twice Hollywood’s decline, according to TheWrap (2009).
Here’s a breakdown of how the old porn business has shrunk:
| Measure | Change | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Playboy magazine circulation | 7.2 million → 800,000 (↓ 88.9%) | 1972–2015 |
| Adult film permits in Los Angeles County | ↓ 95% | 2012–2013 |
| Adult DVD sales | ↓ 50% | 2007–2012 |
| Adult DVD sales and rentals | ↓ 22% | 2008 |
| Byborg (LiveJasmin) profit | $161 million → $110 million (↓ 32%) | 2022 to following year |
| PLBY Group revenue | $143.0 million → $120.9 million (↓ 15.5%) | 2023–2025 |

Even cam sites have cooled. LiveJasmin’s net revenue fell by nearly a tenth in January to July 2025 and its active subscribers by more than a quarter, according to internal documents seen by Telex; Docler disputes the trend. Docler then said it would cut 315 jobs, 200 in Budapest and 115 in Luxembourg.
Playboy stopped printing its magazine in 2020. PLBY Group credited its 4% revenue rise in 2025, to $120.9 million, to licensing and its Honey Birdette lingerie brand, and it still made a net loss of $12.7 million (Stock Titan).
How Does the Porn Industry Compare With Netflix and Hollywood?
Netflix’s revenue reached $45.2 billion in 2025, according to Advanced Television, about 17 times our $2.63 billion verified porn floor. The floor equals just 5.8% of Netflix’s revenue (our calculation).
The $97 billion myth would make porn 2.1 times Netflix and 2.9 times the $33.55 billion global box office of 2025, as estimated by Gower Street Analytics (our calculations). No disclosed figure comes close.
Here’s a breakdown of porn industry figures vs mainstream entertainment:
| Figure | Value | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency Market Research adult entertainment estimate | $337.7 billion | 2025 |
| “$97 billion” porn myth (TopTen Reviews) | $97 billion | 2006 |
| Netflix revenue | $45.2 billion | 2025 |
| Global box office | $33.55 billion | 2025 |
| US and Canada box office | $8.6 billion | 2025 |
| OnlyFans fan payments | $7.22 billion | FY2024 |
| Our verified porn floor | $2.63 billion | 2022–2025 |
| US porn websites (IBISWorld) | $2.6 billion | 2026 |

A fairer comparison is US to US. IBISWorld’s $2.6 billion estimate for US porn websites equals about 30% of the $8.6 billion US and Canada box office in 2025, according to Axios (our calculation). Fans’ OnlyFans spending in FY2024 equaled 21.5% of the global box office.

Methodology
We reviewed 125 data points from 48 sources. Market-size estimates come from commercial research firms (Allied Market Research, Global Industry Analysts and 360iResearch via Research and Markets, Transparency Market Research, IBISWorld); these are paid models with different definitions, and some include sex toys, prostitution or strip clubs.
Company figures come from company accounts and releases (Fenix International via Forbes, Variety and Euronews; PLBY Group), press reports of filings and investor materials (The Globe and Mail, Semafor, The Logic, Irish Examiner, Paperjam, Telex, ICIJ) and Canadian parliamentary testimony. Aylo, LiveJasmin’s owners and Stripchat are private, so their figures are reported, projected or partial, and years differ.
Historical estimates come from Forbes (2001), ABC News, HuffPost, TheWrap and Quartz, which relay trade sources such as AVN and XBIZ. The Free Speech Coalition is an adult-industry trade group, and Family Safe Media is a conservative activist group. Traffic figures are Semrush estimates. The disclosed-figures floor, currency conversion, ratios and percentage changes are our own calculations.
Key Takeaways
The porn industry’s size depends almost entirely on the definition. Commercial estimates run from $58.4 billion to $337.7 billion globally, and the famous $97 billion figure is a 2006 estimate with no detailed published method that included sex toy production.
The money we can trace is far smaller: about $2.63 billion in disclosed figures from OnlyFans, LiveJasmin, MindGeek and Stripchat, close to IBISWorld’s $2.6 billion estimate for US porn websites alone. Netflix’s $45.2 billion in 2025 revenue is about 17 times that floor.
