Porn sites are rarely a direct malware trap, but they are almost never private: 93% of 22,484 porn websites leaked user data to at least one third party in a 2019 study by Maris, Libert and Henrichsen.
The bigger malware risk sits around the sites, not on them. Kaspersky counted 42,973 phone users attacked by malware disguised as porn in 2019, more than double the year before.
In this article, we’ll break down tracking, malware, scams, data breaches, age-verification risks and private browsing myths, plus the signs of a safer site.
Top Porn Site Safety Statistics
- 93% of 22,484 porn websites leak user data to at least one third party.
- Google’s tracking services appear on 74% of porn sites, compared with 10% for Facebook.
- 44.97% of porn site URLs reveal or strongly suggest a specific sexual interest or identity.
- Phone users attacked by porn-disguised malware more than doubled, to 42,973 in 2019.
- Extortionists claimed 201,211,943 records of Pornhub Premium members’ viewing and search activity in December 2025.
- An emulator-based camera injection fooled 9 of 10 selfie age-estimation services used by European adult sites in a 2026 test.
- 56.3% of people in a 2018 study wrongly believed private browsing stops searches being linked to their logged-in account.
Are Porn Sites Safe?
Mostly safe from viruses, much less safe from tracking. Only 7 of 6,843 porn sites were flagged as potentially malicious by VirusTotal in a 2019 privacy audit by Vallina et al., yet 72% set third-party cookies.

In a second 2019 study, 93% of 22,484 porn sites leaked user data to third parties. That’s about 20,910 sites passing data to outside companies (our calculation). The real risks are tracking, fake downloads, scam emails and leaked account data.
Here’s a breakdown of the main risks and the key figure for each:
| Risk | Key Figure | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Data sent to third parties | 93% of 22,484 porn sites | 2019 |
| URLs that reveal sexual interests | 44.97% of porn site URLs | 2019 |
| Sites flagged as malicious | 7 of 6,843 porn sites | 2019 |
| Malware disguised as porn | 106,928 PC users and 42,973 phone users attacked | 2019 |
| Sextortion complaints to the FBI | 52,967 from adults aged 20+ | 2025 |
| Account data claimed by extortionists | 201,211,943 Pornhub Premium activity records | 2025 |
| Selfie age checks fooled by camera injection | 9 of 10 providers | 2026 |
How Many Porn Sites Track You?
Almost all of them. 93% of porn sites leak user data to a third party, and the ones that do send it to an average of 7 outside domains, according to Maris et al., the latest available large-scale data (2019). 79% of pages set a third-party cookie.
Google is the biggest tracker by far. Its services appear on 74% of porn sites, compared with 24% for Oracle and 10% for Facebook. Porn ad network ExoClick reaches 40%, or 4 times as many sites as Facebook (our calculation).
Here’s a breakdown of the trackers found most often on porn sites:
| Company | Share of Porn Sites | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 74% | General (analytics, ads, APIs) | |
| ExoClick | 40% | Adult ad network |
| Oracle | 24% | General (data broker, ads) |
| JuicyAds | 11% | Adult ad network |
| 10% | General (social, ads) | |
| EroAdvertising | 9% | Adult ad network |
| Cloudflare | 7% | Infrastructure |

The URL itself can give you away. 44.97% of porn site URLs expose or strongly suggest a specific gender, sexual identity or interest, so any tracker that records the page address learns it too.
Privacy policies rarely help. Only 17% of sites had one the researchers could extract, written at a grade 14 reading level, about two years of college. Just 11% of the third parties seen tracking users were named in those policies.
Do Porn Sites Respect Privacy Rules?
Rarely. Only 16% of 6,843 porn sites had an accessible privacy policy and 4.41% showed a cookie consent banner to EU visitors, according to Vallina et al. (2019). That’s about 1 site in 23 asking for consent (our calculation).

The porn web runs on its own tracking network. 84% of the 3,673 third-party services found on porn sites didn’t appear on popular mainstream sites, and cookie syncing, where trackers swap user IDs, showed up on 58% of the top 100 porn sites.
About 5% of sites used canvas fingerprinting, which identifies a device without cookies. Notably, 91% of those fingerprinting scripts were missing from EasyList and EasyPrivacy, the filter lists many ad blockers use.

Can You Get a Virus From Porn Sites?
You can, but it usually comes from a download or a malicious ad, not the video page. Kaspersky’s software caught malware disguised as porn attacking 106,928 PC users in 2019, down 21.2% from 135,780 in 2018, according to its Explicit content and cyberthreats report.
Phones went the other way. Mobile users attacked grew 2.2 times, from 19,699 to 42,973. Adware dominated: 7 of the top 10 mobile threats disguised as porn were adware.
Here’s a breakdown of porn-themed threats in Kaspersky’s data:
| Threat | 2018 | 2019 |
|---|---|---|
| PC users attacked by porn-disguised malware | 135,780 | 106,928 |
| Mobile users attacked by porn-disguised malware | 19,699 | 42,973 |
| Users hit by malware stealing porn-site logins | 110,000 | 38,846 |

Login theft got more intense even as it reached fewer people. Attacks rose 37% to 1,169,153 while affected users fell 65%, which works out to about 30 attacks per victim (our calculation). Stolen premium accounts sold on underground forums from $0.50.
The 2019 figures use a narrower method than Kaspersky’s earlier count. In 2017, at least 1.2 million users met porn-themed mobile malware, 25.4% of all mobile users who encountered any malware, according to a Kaspersky press release.
Are Porn Sites Riskier Than Other Websites?
Not by the older measures. Only 2.4% of the infected URLs Symantec detected in 2011 were porn or adult sites, ranking them 10th among threat sources, according to NBC News. Users clicking online ads were 182 times more likely to be infected than visitors to adult sites, according to Cisco’s 2013 report, as covered by SecurityWeek.
Ads are also how attacks reach porn audiences. Here’s a breakdown of documented malvertising campaigns on adult sites:
| Campaign | Year Reported | What Happened |
|---|---|---|
| KovCoreG (Proofpoint) | 2017 | Fake browser and Flash updates on Pornhub ads for more than a year; millions exposed in 4 countries |
| Malsmoke (Malwarebytes) | 2020 | Adult ad networks on xHamster, a site with 1.06 billion monthly visits, pushed info-stealing malware |
| Fake CAPTCHA (Kaspersky) | 2024 | Ads spread through adult, betting and file-sharing sites, among others, reached 140,000+ users; 20,000+ were redirected to infected pages |
How Much Do Porn Sextortion Scams Make?
Over $1.3 million in 11 months for a single spam operation. Researchers traced Bitcoin payments from 4,340,736 sextortion emails, the “I recorded you through your webcam” kind, and found a lower-bound revenue of $1,300,620 to $1,352,266, according to Paquet-Clouston et al. (2019).
That’s roughly $118,000 a month (our calculation). SophosLabs traced a similar pace a year later: 50.9 Bitcoin, or nearly $500,000, over 5 months, from emails demanding up to $800, according to Sophos.
These are mass-mailed bluffs: the same message goes to millions of inboxes. Sextortion overall is a bigger crime. The FBI logged 52,967 sextortion complaints from adults aged 20 or older in 2025, who reported $42.9 million in adjusted losses (our calculation from FBI IC3 age data).
Here’s a breakdown of adult sextortion complaints by age:
| Age Group | Complaints (2025) |
|---|---|
| 20–29 | 22,061 |
| 30–39 | 11,855 |
| 40–49 | 7,791 |
| 50–59 | 5,139 |
| 60+ | 6,121 |

Sextortion built on real images is a separate problem, and the data on sending nudes and non-consensual image sharing puts the share of adults threatened at 14.5% across 10 countries.
Have Porn Sites Been Hacked?
Yes, several times. One of the biggest breaches in the adult industry exposed more than 412 million accounts across FriendFinder Networks’ dating and cam sites in 2016, according to TechCrunch. It included over 15 million accounts users thought they had deleted.
The most recent case involves Pornhub. In December 2025, the ShinyHunters gang claimed 201,211,943 records of Premium members’ search, watch and download history, including email addresses and locations, according to BleepingComputer.
Pornhub said the incident affects “only select Premium users,” came through former analytics vendor Mixpanel and exposed no passwords or payment details. Mixpanel said it found no sign the data was stolen in its November 2025 incident, and that it was last accessed through a legitimate employee account at Pornhub’s parent company in 2023. That parent company is Aylo, formerly MindGeek, whose fines and settlements appear in Pornhub’s ownership and legal history.
Here’s a breakdown of major breaches and exposures at adult sites:
| Site | Year | Accounts or Records | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAM4 | 2020 | 10.88 billion records (7TB) | Exposed by misconfigured database; found by researchers |
| FriendFinder Networks (AdultFriendFinder, Cams.com, Penthouse) | 2016 | 412 million+ accounts | Hacked; dating and cam network |
| Pornhub Premium (via Mixpanel data) | 2025 | 201,211,943 activity records | Attackers’ claim; Pornhub says select Premium users affected, not a breach of its systems |
| Brazzers forum | 2016 (2012 incident) | 790,724 accounts | Hacked forum software; plaintext passwords |
| xHamster | 2016 | 377,400 accounts | Account details traded; unsalted MD5 hashes |

The CAM4 records included sexual orientation, chat transcripts and about 11 million records with email addresses, though there was no sign anyone malicious accessed them.
Is Age Verification on Porn Sites Safe?
Not yet. A camera injection attack fooled 9 of 10 selfie age-estimation providers found on European adult sites, and 4 of 8 document-upload services accepted a fake ID, according to a 2026 preprint by Lavermicocca et al. at Politecnico di Milano, not yet peer-reviewed.
The researchers tested 154 adult sites in Italy, Germany, France and the UK, and 15 verification providers. “Every provider exhibited at least one exploitable weakness,” they wrote in the paper.

Here’s a breakdown of how many sites checked ages, by country:
| Country | Sites With Age Verification (of 154) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 69 | 44.8% |
| France | 38 | 24.7% |
| Germany | 7 | 4.5% |
| Italy | 4 | 2.6% |
VPN blocking was almost absent: only 1 of 154 sites appeared to block both commercial VPN services the researchers tested.
The bigger privacy worry is the ID data itself. Verification firm AU10TIX, reportedly used by TikTok and X, left login credentials exposed online for more than a year, giving access to names, dates of birth and ID images, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (2024). In October 2025, about 70,000 users of chat platform Discord may have had government ID photos exposed through a vendor handling age appeals, according to Cyber Daily.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, many adults won’t hand over ID. 78% of UK adults said they would be unwilling to upload ID to access adult sites, and 63% of them feared it getting into the wrong hands, in a 2022 YouGov poll for browser maker Aloha.
Even so, checks are spreading: 27 US states now have age verification laws for porn sites, according to the Free Speech Coalition. In the UK, 64 of the top 100 porn sites had age checks by June 2026, according to Ofcom.
Does Incognito Mode Hide Your Porn Browsing?
Only from people using your device. Yet 56.3% of 460 participants wrongly believed private browsing stops searches being linked to them while logged in, and 40.2% believed websites couldn’t estimate their location, in a 2018 study by Wu et al.

Another 27.1% thought private mode changes protection against viruses and malware. It doesn’t. In a 2022 survey of 5,710 Americans by search company DuckDuckGo, which makes a competing browser, 76% of private browsing users couldn’t accurately identify what it protects.
Google settled over the confusion without paying damages. To settle a class action over tracking of private browsing since June 2016, it agreed to destroy billions of data records, update its disclosures and let Incognito users block third-party cookies for 5 years, a deal plaintiffs valued at more than $5 billion and up to $7.8 billion, according to CTV News (Reuters) (2024).
Do VPNs Make Porn Sites Safer?
They hide your location from the site and your browsing from your internet provider, not the cookies and trackers inside the page. Demand surges after age checks anyway: UK VPN demand rose 1,987% at its peak in July 2025, according to Top10VPN.
Proton VPN said hourly UK sign-ups rose more than 1,400% over its baseline when checks began on July 25, 2025, as reported by TechRadar. UK daily VPN app users rose from about 650,000 to over 1.4 million, then eased to around 900,000 by November 2025, according to Ofcom.
Picking the wrong VPN can make things worse. In a study of 283 Android VPN apps by Ikram et al. (2016), 18% didn’t encrypt traffic, 84% leaked IPv6 traffic and 38% were flagged by at least one antivirus engine.
How Can You Tell if a Porn Site Is Safe?
No porn site is 100% safe, but the risks cluster on small, obscure sites. 92% of the 75 porn sites in the Alexa top 1,000 supported HTTPS encryption, compared with 22% of sites ranked below 100,000, according to Vallina et al. That’s a 4.2-times gap (our calculation).

Size also means accountability. 96% of porn sites had no reliable information about who runs them, while the companies behind the biggest porn sites by traffic are known and face regulators in the EU, UK and US.
Here’s a breakdown of safety signals and the data behind them:
| Safety Signal | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| HTTPS padlock | 68% of porn sites weren’t fully HTTPS in 2019, and 8% of those sent sensitive cookie data unencrypted |
| Established, identifiable operator | 96% of porn sites had no reliable owner information |
| No “codec” or “player” downloads | 39% of PC users attacked by porn-disguised malware were hit by Trojan-Downloaders |
| No apps from outside official stores | Mobile users attacked by porn-disguised malware rose 118% in 2019 |
| Ad and tracker blocker | ExoClick appeared on 40% of porn sites, and 91% of fingerprinting scripts were missing from common block lists |
| Unique password and card hygiene | Malware stealing porn-site logins made 1,169,153 attacks in 2019 |
| Trusted, paid VPN (if any) | 18% of 283 Android VPN apps didn’t encrypt traffic |
Paying for porn adds its own exposure, since a billing record links your name to the site. Using a virtual or single-use card and a separate email address limits what a breach like FriendFinder’s can reveal.
Methodology
We reviewed 172 data points from 36 sources. Tracking figures come from two crawls of the porn web published in 2019: Maris, Libert and Henrichsen (22,484 sites from the Alexa top 1 million) and Vallina et al. (6,843 sites, ACM IMC 2019). They measured different samples, so their cookie shares differ (79% vs 72%). Age-verification figures come from a 2026 preprint by Politecnico di Milano researchers that hasn’t been peer-reviewed.
Malware counts are Kaspersky telemetry from its own users, not global totals, and its June 2020 report is its latest dedicated edition. Malvertising, breach and incident figures come from security vendors and press reports; breach counts labelled as claims are attackers’ statements. Polls by Aloha and DuckDuckGo were commissioned by browser companies that sell privacy features. FBI totals, shares, ratios and per-month figures are our own calculations.
Key Takeaways
Porn sites are more of a privacy risk than a virus risk. 93% leak user data to third parties, Google’s trackers sit on 74% of them, and 44.97% of porn URLs reveal a sexual interest, while only 7 of 6,843 sites were flagged as malicious.
The bigger threats are around the sites: fake downloads, malicious ads, sextortion emails and leaked account data like the 201,211,943 Pornhub Premium records claimed in 2025. Big, HTTPS-only sites, no downloads, an ad blocker and a separate email address can reduce that exposure.
FAQ
Are porn sites safe?
Mostly from malware, not from tracking. Only 7 of 6,843 porn sites were flagged as malicious in a 2019 study, but 93% of 22,484 porn sites leak user data to third parties, and 72% set third-party cookies.
Can you get a virus on your phone from porn?
Yes, mostly through fake apps and ads. Kaspersky counted 42,973 phone users attacked by porn-disguised malware in 2019, up from 19,699 in 2018, and 7 of the top 10 such threats were adware.
Does incognito mode hide porn?
Only from other people using your device. Websites, trackers and your internet provider still see it. 56.3% of people in a 2018 study wrongly believed private browsing stops searches being linked to them while logged in.
Has Pornhub been hacked?
In December 2025, extortionists claimed 201,211,943 records of Pornhub Premium members’ activity. Pornhub said only select Premium users were affected, the data came from a former analytics vendor, and no passwords or payment details were exposed; the vendor, Mixpanel, disputes that the data came from its systems.
Is porn age verification safe?
Not reliably. In a 2026 test, 9 of 10 selfie age-estimation providers were fooled by camera injection and 4 of 8 document services accepted a fake ID. Vendors holding ID data have been breached too: in 2025, about 70,000 Discord users may have had government ID photos exposed through a vendor handling age appeals.
